The comments from Sir Elton to shut down the internet just really bother me!
What if someone from the piano roll business or the sheet music publisher had told Thomas Edison that the phonograph needed to be destroyed because it was going to ruin the music business. Where would Elton or any other artist be today that succeed in recording. I hope he said his comments just to start a buzz (which it did) and not that he thought for a second that it was valid comment.
He was quoted as saying music is not the quality it was in the 70’s. Just listen to the talent I am hearing on www.SmoothJazzSpace.com and don’t tell me there is great music being created today. More great music than ever is getting to people who listen on MP3 players, Ipods, Iphones, and soon in their cars on wireless internet devices.
Thank goodness for the internet, social networking, blogging, podcasting and digital recording software that talent that would have never been heard today can be now
A message to Sir Elton…
Elton, your internet was record contracts, vinyl, radio and TV which made you famous and wealthy at one time.
Our radio & TV is podcasting and blogs, our record contracts are with ourselves, and the internet can make us niche famous all of the world. You had to beg, wait and sell your soul to get a deal. Thousands of deserving talent never got a chance to be heard.
Now we can put our music on the internet which is open to everybody, and the market decides what is good, not Mr. Record Exec. Regardless, we all just want to prosper doing what we love, creating music.
If you were unknown, you would have used whatever technology available you could to be heard.
How dare you want to kill what you don’t understand!
But that is what music industry keeps doing. Trying to kill what they don’t like or understand.
And that is why in my opinion, they are dinosaurs becoming extinct.
My 2 cents.. Mike
This blog posting from Paul at his blog www.PaulColligan.com
My buddy and audio/video mentor Mike Stewart has launched a fascinating little project over at BuyThatCD.com.
Essentially, Mike has launched a “real” record label and his first project is an album called “Unspoken.”
The album is actually, quite good - but that’s not the point of this post.
His little record label is doing two very interesting things:
He’s giving away the single for FREE. That’s right. FREE. Can you really make money with free content? How much will that upset the powers that be? We’ll be following that story here as well.
But even more interesting is his offer to Podcasters. Buy his CD (physical or $9.99 download) and get 5 original royalty free smooth jazz themes for use in your Podcasts or other audio/video projects. Tracks like these normally cost $30 a pop (and these are better than most) so you’re looking at like a $150 value. It will be interesting to see how this project goes (and we’ll be tracking this one here as well).
If you are interested in the whole story, I interviewed Mike for Electronic Marketing Interviews Number #3. Good stuff - he’s a smart guy.
Listen to the interview!
